Hyacinthus
orientalis is the Latin name for the common hyacinth. Native to Asia,
it was brought to Europe in the 16th century. The flowers are highly
fragrant and this plant is often cultivated to flower at Christmas so it
can be given as a gift. Hyacinths are easy plants to grow, well suited
for a beginner. They grow up to around 30cm in height with narrow and
thick bright green leaves and bell shaped flowers that grow in a spike
atop a sturdy stem. The flowers can be various colours including blue,
purple, pink or white. They like full sun or partial shade and light,
moist soil with good drainage
